Since Long Island is basically sediment, I'd imagine that would act as a kind of natural shock absorber.

Hurricanes rarely go that far North unless they have already hit the coast and by then they would have lost a lot of force.

Some sand shifted near Daytona Beach about 20 years ago, and caused a small earthquake.
The second sentence was referring to the earthquakes out in the Mid West.
