Really hyped for the Switch, to the point that I've decided I'm going to pass on buying a laptop with a GTX 1060 or better and just get another mid-range clunker with decent enough integrated graphics.

I posted my thoughts over on NSider2's replacement, and since I'm too lazy to type everything again I'll just copy/paste it with some stuff slightly out of context.

Quote
I'm really curious whether it will be "more powerful" while docked. I'm wondering if the dock includes any additional hardware (such as a GPU), or if being docked lets the tablet run its internal hardware at a higher clock speed.

The Switch likely will not be getting anywhere near the PS4, though. The Tegra X2 chip will probably pull ~750 GFLOPS, while even the Xbox One is capable of upwards of 1300 GFLOPS. The Switch will probably wind up being just over 50% as fast as the Xbox One.

However, depending on the resolution of the screen, this may or may not be too much of an issue. If the screen is only pushing, say, 1280x720, then it doesn't need as capable of a GPU to push equivalent graphics settings. Pixel density will be pretty decent on that tablet even at 720p, and I personally won't be at all disappointed if that's the resolution that Nintendo decides to target.

720p would be a bit low, though. If Nintendo were to target, say, 900p instead while docked, then that would require pushing a bit over 50% more pixels while significantly improving image quality.

In many respects, the Switch will be a spiritual successor to the NVIDIA Shield. It won't be pushing console-level horsepower, but it will be targeting a lower resolution and emphasising portable gaming. This - in my opinion - is a very good move. Their choice of SoC should provide stellar power efficiency and prolonged battery life while still being enough to push beautiful visuals.

I'm personally planning to use the Switch almost exclusively as a portable gaming device. When I have friends over it'd be docked, but if it's just me, I'll be preferring the portable screen. I imagine that all games will be targeting at least the native resolution on that, so it will probably give the cleanest image possible without having to upscale to, say, a 1440p or 4K display.

This isn't a device that's going to be competing with the hardware in the Xbox One and PS4 - and frankly, it shouldn't be competing. This console generation has been immensely disappointing, in my opinion. I haven't had any reason to want to purchase either an Xbone nor a PS4, since my PC can already do practically everything those consoles can, but better! There are some exclusives that I'd love to get my hands on (e.g. Uncharted), but I already otherwise have so much to keep me occupied at home that I can't justify the investment.

I'm in the market for a new laptop. Prior to the Switch announcement, I was planning on getting something with a GTX 1060 or better. Laptops are still rather bulky, though, and unless you're "docked" you're still getting a sub-par experience when using them. The Switch is a complete game-changer in that regard. I've decided that I'm going to invest in another mid-range, highly portable laptop instead of opting for an expensive, bulky, power-hungry behemoth.

The Switch looks like it's going to be everything that I wanted and then some. Nintendo has been disappointing me fairly frequently in these past few years, but I'm fully on board this hype train. The mobile gaming market is saturated as it is, but it's saturated with terrifyingly low-quality, unmemorable, pay-to-win trash. Nintendo has a chance to truly succeed here, and I think that they could relive the success of the Wii if they play their cards right. They seem to be targeting both casual gamers as well as their older, "maturer" core audience.

Imagine if the Switch becomes the new target platform for games such as Pokémon. You'll have one single, centralised console that can do it all. You can enjoy the game on the go, but then dock it and enjoy a comfortable, familiar environment at home. That's exactly what I want right now, and nothing else on offer currently gives you that choice. Sure, you can get close to that with a PC, particularly with emulation, but you still have a lot of bulk to be concerned about and the market offerings are quite poor and expensive.

I haven't felt this enthusiastic for a new Nintendo console in over a decade.

I think this is Nintendo learning from their mistake.
"Maybe we should call this... the Wii! and the DS!"
*Next system time*
"Well, Wii & DS worked so well, let's try to build off of their success, Wii U! And the 3DS!
The next one will be Wii U Too, probably after we bathe in money."
*Maybe a month later*
"Well poop, let's Switch our strategy."

Oh my god, that's the greatest idea ever. Merging into another forum? That would up the traffic here immensely. I don't know why anyone hasn't ever thought of that before. You sir, you are going places.

But yeah, Nintendo Switch. It's been ages since Nintendo has done anything to really grab my attention, but I am totally hyped up for the Switch. I haven't owned a DS or Wii in years. I don't even have a Nintendo ID, but yeah, Switch looks really nifty. It'll come in handy on the hour and a half drives to play golf in Corona, CA.

maybe this is me being a cynical poop hole but I don't understand why anyone is excited for this thing when we:

1) Have not seen any games for it outside of blurry candid scenes in the initial trailer. Barely counts.
2) Have all but confirmed information that the Switch will be a weak contender power-wise. 3rd time in a row Nintendo has done this, and just because it worked once doesn't mean it'll work again. We'll see.
3) Have no idea if our Eshop purchases carry over. I don't know about you guys, but I am going to be mad off if I can't transfer poop FOR FREE to the new console
4) Know that the screen is not a touch screen, so it isn't even really a true tablet(this part doesn't bother me, but its worth noting considering how much normies seem to be interested in the Switch and we all know they want a touch screen)
5) We don't know what controllers work on it

All things said and done, I just want good games. Games like Paper Mario Color Splash, Mario 3D Land, and two HD remasters of Zelda rubbed salt in the wound that was the Wii U for me. There were tons of great games and I like my Wii U and all, but I can't deny the problems like others can. StarFox Zero being a solid game with poop controls is another big issue I have.

Though, I think the biggest problem I have with the Wii U is that it got a sequel to a handheld Mario game for its "main" Mario game. Where the intercourse  is my Mario 64 sequel? Where is F-Zero? Bar Splatoon and Nintendoland, where were the new ideas? There was a lot of potential for the machine but no one wanted to use it when its just plain easier to make money on PS4, Xbox, and mobile through microtransactions and DLC, etc.

tl;dr it is pointless to get worked up over the switch when its release is 4 months away and we still know nothing. No games.

Title: Re: Nintendo Switch
Post by: Zero on December 15, 2016, 07:11:30 AM
Sure the game is solid, but its hardly what anyone asked for and now that its been done we really need to move on. We've had like 7 years of New Super Mario Bros. or equivalent Mario games. Enough is enough.

Take the Mario 64/Sunshine style and bring it into the modern age or else I'm pretty much intercourse ing done. I'm too old for this bullpoop and if we're being honest here the NSMB/3DWL style has stages designed with multiplayer in mind and unintentionally hampers single player play.

It's ridiculous how a modern Mario game gives Mario less movement and offensive options than a game from 1996. JUST SAYING.

I could go on and on but yeah, 3D World and Land can suck my nuts. Good games. Not great. And certainly nothing anyone asked for.

As a small aside: If I can say anything that I really loved about them, its all the SMB3 dicksucking those games do. SMB3 is GOAT.

New reports say it'll be more like PS3 level graphics, maybe a little better. For a handheld though, that's pretty good.

Mario isn't coming until Christmas and Zelda is the only good release game. At least you can play Skyrim in glorious 1280x720 on a 6 inch screen for 3 hours until the battery dies.

Underwhelmed by their presentation.

A friend of mine who's a freelance dev that has worked for some big names like CDPR and Disney summarized Nintendo's main problem/quirk very succinctly for me: at its core, Nintendo still considers itself a toy company rather than a video game company.

Thus their systems are generally underpowered, are slow to adapt to new technology (online play, WPA not available on their handhelds until the DS), and have at least one gimmick like connectivity with GCN, Wiimote with Wii, etc. They'll also do whatever it is that they want to do and darn the consequences, which usually means doing whatever they feel will sell well in Japan.

I think they should've just made something designed to stay at your TV that's more powerful and something similar to the current Switch.
Iwata said something about converging everything and using the same architecture, OS, etc. so they could have devices with different specs share games across platforms, but instead we're getting a weird frankenstein console/handheld that isn't particularly good at either.

With realistic people.
Sonic Adventure had people, but they could pass as cartoon people. They weren't hyper-realistic. Maybe they were supposed to be, but they didn't look it. It could literally be because the graphics weren't good enough to look realistic, but it looked believable for a Sonic Universe.

ha yeah. It's a nice device for what it is but I really do understand people's criticisms. I got a screen protector and a "dock sock" to go with it and i have had no issues so far, but with any other home console I wouldn't have had to do that. Sorta wish that Nintendo would make a console like the pre-wii days again and a lot of the time that is where I'm coming from when poop-talking Nintendo but I guess that is just never going to happen.
