Just felt like typing some stuff
« on: April 17, 2012, 09:00:46 AM »
Brought out Black again for the first time in a while, since I'm actually getting excited for a 3rd version (Black 2) for once. I have a lot of team members I cycle through due to my indecisiveness; I decided Sceptile, my first starter from my first game (Sapphire), deserved some time out since Leafeon took his spot for part of Sinnoh and Lilligant is a Sleep Powder/Quiver Dance/Giga Drain monster. It's nostalgic to be using good ol' Sceptile again; I've abandoned most of my Sapphire team bar Flygon (who just sits in the box) and Salamence (who has been my Flyer in ever gen I've owned). He's a Swords Dancer rather than the usual SubSeed or Special Sceptile, but I like him, especially since I used a Drain Punch TM on him years ago for some inexplicable reason and he's now enjoying its boost to 75 power as a result.

The rest of my team has gotten more recent cycling, so they aren't as itching to fight as Sceptile; I've got my Empoleon from Diamond (poor, poor Samurott just wasn't blessed enough, plus he's also a Swords Dancer and I don't need two at a time), my Zapdos (one of my favorite Pokemon as a little kid; everyone else on my team rotates, but Zapdos is a constant, except when I break out Ampharos only to be reminded how sadly terrible she is), and... well, I guess I'm not as sure about the rest. I love my Victini to death, but his banning from Subways makes me want to avoid getting too used to him since I know I won't be able to use him later on. As a result, Typhlosion and Charizard battle it out for my Fire spot most of the time; I've always loved Typhlosion's family, and his Eruption sweeps are nice, but Charizard was my actual FireRed starter, plus he's got more varied move pool. The last two spots on the team are usually Espeon and either Tyrannitar or Dragonite, but I recently gave good old Lucario some playtime again, and I'm working on training up a Curse/Payback Umbreon as well (the Espeon and Umbreon duo is the only scenario in which I would allow more than one Eeveelution on a single team).

It saddens me to see Pokemon I love born into mediocrity; Ampharos, Samurott, Typhlosion, and even that anteater Pokemon, which saddens me not in that I really like it, but in that I've waited 5 generations for an anteater and when we finally get it it completely sucks. If I could teach any two Pokemon any two moves, I think it would be:
1. Samurott gets Shell Smash
2. Typhlosion gets Earth Power
simply because they both make enough sense to justify it (Shell pokemon and Volcano pokemon) and they would both greatly increase their competence.

I think Flareon's crying out for Flare Blitz even more than those two.

Especially because Samurott doesn't have a shell it would even smash. You DO know what a Pokemon does when it uses Shell Smash, right?

I like those starters, though...
I mean, I COULD use other Pokemon, but Lilligant and Victini are the only non-starter Grass and Fire types I really care for, so it's not too big of a deal (and yes, I want a Grass and a Fire on my team, regardless of the awfulness of them). Water is a different scenario (and again, I want the type, period), because there are a ton of Water types I love, but Empoleon is one of my favorites anyway and is a decent fighter imo.

Well, it's just personal preference; I don't want to use my Flareon too terribly. Also, Samurott is covered in shells; he could just crack his shoulder armor and it would let him swing his sword faster.

Another two random things:
1. Apparently Mew is UU tier now, or, rather, he has been and I wasn't paying attention. That's pretty tempting, but if I'm gonna use a Psychic legendary, he's not exactly top of the list, and that's not even including Ubers.
2. Anyone have a Terrakion they don't want to use? The one from my game is Calm, and I think I want to train one up, but I'd like one that doesn't suck.

You want weird legendary Pokemon tiers? Kyurem is BL.

Still, I'm not quite sure you know what Shell Smash entails. Samurott is not covered in shells; if you knew anything about it outside the fact that it's the final form of Oshawott, you'll know that it can stand up on its hind legs and pull swords out of "sheaths" on its forelegs. They're not solid shells, they're removable blades.

Samurott's just not the Pokemon for Shell Smash.

So here is Samurott. He isn't enveloped in a complete shell, but his armor is definitely bits and pieces of shell.

In that regard, one could argue that he could smash his shell armor. But seeing as every pokemon that learns it is completely enveloped in a shell and he's really the only pokemon I can think of with only pieces of shell instead of a whole one, it's also understandable why he does not have the move. Some Pokemon get moves that don't really make sense for them to have. If Samurott smashed his shell, wouldn't his attack stats go down because he uses his shell blades and shell horn to fight? Meh. Game logic.

If he got the move sometime in the future I wouldn't be surprised. It'd certainly make him a better Pokemon.

Anyway, I tried the GTS for a Terrakion... and I apparently overestimated my chances, because the GTS is still as silly as it was when I used it in Diamond. ANYONE here willing to trade one? I don't care what the nature is as long as Speed and Attack aren't lowered; I just don't want my Calm one.

The B/W GTS is full of people asking for Level 100 Zekroms.

Is that the new thing these days?

Alright, I'm extremely ticked off right now. My Focus Sash, my most useful item which I had to mind-numbingly earn 48 BP to get, is GONE. I have absolutely no idea what happened; none of my Pokemon use Trick or Fling or anything, it's not on any Pokemon I own, it's not in my bag, the thing just flat-out DISAPPEARED. What the heck?!?!?! Now I have to earn ANOTHER one, PLUS I still need to get my Life Orb and Choice Bands and Specs and Scarves since I hadn't gotten those yet... I really wish I could have just brought them all from Diamond.

Seriously?! I feel like a complete idiot. Did I really go through five years of using it in Diamond and never once use it in the story?

WELL, "mystery" solved, but still upset... it's gonna take a while to get that thing back.

I think Focus Band doesn't disappear in a story battle, but it's not as efficient as Focus Sash.

Good ol' bulbapedia.

Focus Band has a 10% chance of working from a OHKO, but it will always last you in any battle.

Focus Sash is pretty much guarantess the above, but it goes bye-bye in one use unless you use it in a special facility.

Doesn't need to be an OHKO for Focus Band to work. A pokemon can be at half HP, survive a would-be kill hit with 1 HP, and then SURVIVE IT AGAIN, holding on a second time with the Band, and not losing any more HP.

Unless they changed it since then; I remember that working in Gen 3 but it's a pretty slim chance to have it work twice in a row.

Just my luck it would be my opponent in the battle tower. :|

But yeah, a lot of items are consumed after use. Focus Sash, White Herb, etc. that you can only get in one place (usually the Battle Frontier/whatever). Make sure you research which items are consumed on use. Pretty much keep this general rule in mind: If it's guaranteed to work, it will only work once. The items that last are the ones that have a 10%-or-so chance of working, but anything that gives an effect 100% of the time will be consumed.

unless its like you know, the status orbs, leftovers, or any one of the other items that have 100% chance to work but aren't consumed

if my flame orb was consumed on my heracross i'd probably just quit playing pokemon
