I don't see how this will work.  At work, last I checked, you can't slack off for months on something and still expect to stay there...nor do the vast majority of colleges for that matter.  I have a class in this school (taught by a pretty cool teacher) who if you don't turn the assignment in, then it's tough poop.

I've only had an I once, because I requested an extension on a project for a class...and that's it.  Anything else and I say no to I's.

It seems like it provides more incentive for kids to not give a poop.
"Oh, I can't fail? FUCKIN' SWEET"

I's?  Im guessing you dont go by a regular grading system. I remember the S I C P  4 3 2 1 system, but that was in Elementary School  :|

I didn't read the full article, but it doesn't seem that bad to me. I mean, sure, there will be kids that abuse it, but in the end they still have to learn the material and take the tests, etc. to show they deserve a good grade. I'd hate it if I took a test on a subject a week after learning it and failed. It would affect my entire GPA and hinder me. But then by the end of the year I might have fully grasped the concept and then ace the section of the final exam pertaining to the subject I had failed before. Regardless of learning the material, your grades reflect how you were before, as well as now. Which, in the end, brings you down when all the quarter grades are put together. Not understanding a concept at the beginning of the year shouldn't matter, as long as you full master the material by the end of it. In that way, people viewing your grades will see how smart you are, not the averages of your previous failures mixed in with your later conquests.

Sure, you can still get bad grades. But at least under this system it is easier to redeem yourself by the end of the year.

Holy poop, you explained this a bit better than the article...I can see where you're going on this.

I say, it should depend on what you are doing.  If it's homework caused...then no, it shouldn't be as easy to redeem...but if the bad grades are caused by a test, then I say they should be able to have a second chance...but there should be a limit or something on when they can make it up by...  make it a little more lenient, but not so loose as for easy abuse.

Damn, where I got mad at an article KJ comes in and enlightens me...nice.

You need consequences in life to be able to grow.  I don't understand how they can call this progress.

Yeah I don't see this working any time soon. Pretty sure you need something like 'motivation' to go and be able to function in society. Whether that is positive or negative is up to them to decide.

Glad I had my share of pre-university schooling here in Holland. Not saying it's a rose garden here, but at least it's not on American levels.
