Title: Watching any good animation?
Post by: Tupin on February 28, 2013, 10:19:23 PM
I don't know about anyone else, but I've really been getting into Gravity Falls. I like the sort of faux-Illuminati conspiracy clues that they put in every episode, and it's actually pretty funny. Probably the best thing to be on the Disney Channel in years. I didn't get why they brought back Lil' Gideon so quickly, though. Kind of ruined the suspense for me, even if it was just one gag. But other than that, it's been pretty strong. There are other shows I watch too, but they go on hiatus for half a year after having half a season.

Anything good that I'm missing that's still airing?

Those are still pretty good shows from what I've seen, CN just doesn't give a poop about non-comedy series.

Sucks, but cannot say I was surprised. For as much as Adventure Time has brought them, they sure have made it so that they have nothing once it stops.

I've only been paying a bit of attention to that. What exactly have they been doing to it? All I saw was that they're doing "a more comedic look" at the Teen Titans.

Sucks that YJ had to end, but Teen Titans Go actually looks pretty funny from what I've seen.

Everyone whining about it needs to go cut themselves somewhere else; people have whined about literally every new DC show since DCAU ended (including Young Justice), and EVERY SINGLE ONE has people loving it within a year and getting upset when it ends. They'll like this one too, just wait.

Also, the people whining that this should be basically Season 6 of the old show needs to grow the heck up. The original series lasted waaaay longer than it deserved to, and it had not one, but THREE finales:
1. Big 12-episode-long final battle adventure with everyone
2. Last look at Slade and Terra while blatantly telling fans that "things change and you should FREAKING DEAL WITH IT"
3. A MOVIE with zero purpose other than to hook up Robin and Starfire (actually, I wonder if that will still be a thing)

Sorry, ranting to no one, but I'm so freaking sick of every comment section of every article related to this show (on other sites) being completely covered in weeaboo deviantarting shippers who bleed themselves over how this show is an insult to the "original" without ever even realizing how the original WAS AN INSULT TO THE COMICS IT WAS BASED ON.

Johnny Test is worse. This may only last a few seasons, we've been dealing with Johnny Test for almost eight years now.

I didn't feel like I was watching a Teen Titans show. Or really any sort of superhero show, especially with that second episode.

Craig McKraken or whatever made Powerpuff Girls and Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, the latter of which is what this art style reminds me of, and "Wander" is played by Kenneth from 30 Rock, who is awesome. That theme may be obnoxious, but this could easily end up the best show DISNEY CHANNEL has, and yes I know that isn't saying much which is the point.

It's not really the networks but more the cartoons that are on them. I don't go out of my way and watch cartoon network for 5 hours, but rather pick shows that I wanna watch then turn into the channels that they're on.

I know what you mean though, I use to watch those channels all the time but I've gotten a lot more picky about what cartoons to watch. I would only watch old cartoons now for nostalgia.

i feel like anime is fine because it tackles mature themes that cartoons on american daytime tv would never bother touching. i just think it's weird to watch shows that are like super intended for kids at this point, unless i watch them ironically.
Title: Re: Watching any good animation?

I really don't watch that much modern anime because of the moeblob phase that Japan has been going through for over a decade makes it really hard to watch, even in stuff where they're not the focus. Doesn't help that Western audiences obsess over these either.

I mean there was a time when I'd put up with it since American cartoons were so bad from like 2004-2010 but really I'd rather watch Lupin or something instead of modern stuff.

A majority of anime in Japan is broadcast at night on main Japanese broadcasting stations, and the anime are usually targeted for the teen/young adult/adult audiences. Also Japan doesn't have any formal guidelines when it comes to censorship but are rather self-censored, so anime can talk about/have more mature themes.

like i liked them as a kid but i have no interest in watching things on those new or old now

TECHNICALLY I don't watch either of those channels... I watch stuff online. Also, I only really watch stuff like Avatar and Young Justice these days, as far as CN, Nick, and Disney go, because those are just good period, not "good compared to ______."

That said, I have several friends who looove Adventure Time and Regular show, and I enjoy it when I watch it with them, because hey, it's a good cartoon and we're geeks with not a lot better to do at that moment. Except Gravity Falls; that show isn't remotely as good as people say it is. At least My Little Pony requires its mass fandom devotion as a basis of even existing, like a big ironic joke people forgot was a joke; Gravity Falls is just mediocre and over-rated all around, like Doctor Who.

I only watched a few episodes of Gravity Falls and it was pretty good. Don't really get the fandom behind it, but the fandoms for popular shows really aren't based in logic. Also, "that" show lost a lot of fans after making two different controversial moves like three months apart.

I think the only thing that can be as overrated as Doctor Who is just Doctor Who...

Something bizarre happens literally every episode.

They time travel,
fight zombies,
run from evil possessed cars,
travel to the moon,
kill evil hotdogs,
ect.

Never heard that. AFAIK, it's coming to both DC and XD and will have a total of 3 seasons, as per Alex Hirsch's original vision for the show.

Hm, I thought that they were just gonna lump July/August into one season since most of the time August isn't a full month of summer. That and Disney had more interest in live-action. Been a while since I heard about the airing thing.

And in other hiatus news, "that" show with the "things" is having its new season this fall instead of in 2015.
