Title: UNDEROATH BREAKUP
Post by: Custom on October 03, 2012, 01:13:53 AM
This is a band that hasn't been relevant in a long time for me, but it bums me out to see them break up.

They announced the disbanding today (well technically yesterday, 10/2)

Personally, they were a huge hand in helping me get into heavier music. The first song I ever tried to scream to was an Underoath track.
Their time had kind of run it's course, but I dunno. It just feels weird seeing them go.

Did this band mean anything to you guys?
WHAT DID YOU THINK OF UNDEROATH?

Underoath was a band I had weird feelings towards in high school. I remember hearing some of the first tracks they recorded and it being bleak as poop. It was practically Black Metalcore. I wasn't really into it, but then out of nowhere I see Underoath and Atreyu shirts everywhere. The metalcore bandwagon exploded. Apparently I had missed their newer stuff so I checked it out because some people told me it was "heavy as intercourse " but when you listen to poop like Morbid Angel, Nile, Necrophagist, Satariel, Cannibal Corpse, and Scar Symmetry it is pretty difficult to consider it as such. They're about as heavy as your average metalcore band, and the only metalcore bands that I've honestly ever truly enjoyed are of the Boston brand(Unearth, Killswitch Engage, though I have a guilty pleasure in Still Remains, etc.).

Admittedly, in high school, I developed a hatred of sorts for the fans of this band. It's like they were blatantly unaware of what type of music Underoath played. They were consistently referred to as "emo" which is a genre that defines bands like Death Cab for Cutie. Not intercourse ing Underoath. In my immaturity my dislike for these people leeched out into the bands themselves because even though I listened to completely different music from these people they seemed to identify with me like I was "one of them". And to be frank, my dislike began when I tried to introduce some actual metal to these people but it was too "scary" for them. What? Scary? Fucking really? I soon learned that for every vagina-y as poop metalcore "fan" there was an educated fan that loved the poop out of the music and loved the poop out of the music I liked too.

I've grown a lot since then. I don't hold any dislike for the band or its fans anymore. And its pretty sad to hear they are breaking up. When Still Remains broke up, it was pretty disappointing.

I decided to go back and check out those early Underoath songs. Man they were on some shrooms or something.

I never really saw the more scene side of things. I always respected both genres and didn't mind the music due to coming from a post-hardcore background. (Underoath was more freshman year stuff, I didn't start listening a lot of deathcore and death metal until late sophomore year of high school.)

I remember I would always play their early stuff for my trU death metal friends that would only listen to Devourment, Nile, Necrophagist, and Deicide and asked them if they liked it. They usually said yes and then I would tell them that it was Underoath. It made them mad 9/10 times it happened, haha.

That is a little surprising to hear, though I've actually only listened to a handful of songs.

I'm no expert. I just know what I've heard. So is that band's problem the same problem MCR had? Where they were labeled as a genre that they aren't? I am not a fan of either band. This is all hear-say from people I know that like said bands.

The problem is less the mislabeling of specific bands, and more a misuse of the emo label entirely.

To put it in death metal terms that I barely understand, calling death cab (or any of the other bands mentioned so far) emo is just as bad as calling every band with harsh vocals death metal.
