So there are a lot of mods out there, some being really great and some being not so great.  I've recently started playing a few mods since I've gotten bored of the games I do have and I've wanted to try something new.  Most of the mods I've played are for Half-Life or Half-Life 2, but there are mods for many other games.  Best of all they're free.

Anyway, some of these mods I've played are really great and I thought maybe some of you guys might want to try them out if you get bored or just want to try something different.

Half-Life Multiplayer Mods

Sven Co-Op
http://www.svencoop.com/
This is a mod that takes the original Half-Life campaign and allows it to be played cooperatively online with other people.  It also has other custom campaigns and new weapons.  Opposing Force is also going to be available soon.
Half-Life 2: Jaykin' Bacon: Source
http://www.superfundungeonrun.com/?page_id=489
Don't let the name fool you, this is a HALF-LIFE multiplayer mod, not a Half-Life 2 mod.  It has the biggest selection of weapons you will find in a game ever and is heavily "inspired" by Metal Gear Solid.  It has your basic game modes such as Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch, but it also has a Snake vs Monkey game mode which is extremely fun if you're doing it right.
Half-Life Singleplayer Mods

Afraid of Monsters
http://www.moddb.com/mods/afraid-of-monsters-dc
This is a single player mod horror game that manages to be pretty scary.  Most of the areas in the game are extremely dark and hard to navigate but its very fun if you can handle it.
Half-Life 2 Multiplayer Mods

Steam already has a few Source Mods up for download through steam.  Mods such as Dystopia, D.I.P.R.I.P., Synergy, and Zombie Panic.  All these mods are really great and fun to play so if you haven't tried this out yet, you should.

Goldeneye Source
http://www.goldeneyesource.net/
This is pretty much an exact copy of the multiplayer aspect of Goldeneye 007 for the N64.  Unfortunately there is no single player campaign, but that really isn't that big of a deal considering how much fun the Multiplayer is.
Modular Combat
http://www.moddb.com/mods/modular-combat
This is pretty much just regular Half-Life 2: Deathmatch, but there is a lot of extra stuff here.  You get Experience Points for killing the HL2 enemies and other players depending on which game mode you're playing.  Every time you level up you are given 2 ability points to change the effects of your ammo, health, armor and you can even get Zombies, Vortigaunts, Manhacks and other enemies to help you out as your minions.
Suicide Survival
http://suicidesurvival.2ndsky.ch/
This is a unique mod where you play as either a Suicider or a Survivor.  As a Suicider you play as a Shrub and you have to explode near the Survivors to kill them and get points.  As a Survivor you must stop the Suiciders from killing you and your teammates buy throwing books at them
Kreedz Climbing (KZMOD)
http://www.moddb.com/mods/kreedz-climbing
This one is a bit different than all the other mods in this list, as it isn't an actual deathmatch game or anything like that at all.  Instead the maps are all challenges such as Mazes, Surfs, and Jumps.  If you like any of that you really should consider downloading this.  It's a pretty big download, but there are over 70 maps included with it.
Half-Life 2 Single Player Mods

Research and Development
http://www.moddb.com/mods/research-and-development
This single player source mod challenges the player to solve puzzles and problems using physics and logic.  Really fun mod if you can get through some of the more difficult parts.
Perfect Stride Continuum
http://www.moddb.com/mods/perfect-stride-continuum
Another different kind of mod, this one allows you to be some kind of roller skater that has to pick up these boxes to open up more parts of the map.  It's a pretty small mod, but it'll keep you entertained for a while if you can manage to get used to the control scheme.
Custom

Thanks for the list, I'll try some out

Good job! I, Viewtifulboy, declare you the CHAMPION!

I'm the official winner of the Viewtiful Victory roleplay championship!

Friendly Hostile

Goldeneye source is pretty amazing.

Subach

For my fellow campaignwhores  I recommend "Minerva:Metastasis" for its great story and map design, and "Research and Development" for just being generally mind-blowing(think Portal-like design, but with the gravity gun).

Minerva

RnD

Linkman

Added some more mods to the list.

hyruleboy

I was going to suggest Afraid of Monsters, which I got the first ending in, but you already have that.
So I'm going to recommend Dear Esther ( http://www.moddb.com/mods/dear-esther ), a ghost story that has creeped me out so bad, I'm just afraid to get much further.

Dorgannn

Garry's Mod is my favorite Mod, probably the most popular of Mods.
The aspect of absolute freedom to do anything is awesome.
