Where's Mario headed next?

So the original Super Mario Bros. wasn't enough, so Mario upgraded himself to Super Mario World. Over 10 years later we get Super Mario Galaxy. Then a sequel. What's next? Super Mario universe? How is that supposed to work? Or has Nintendo gone as big as they could go with our Italian plumber?

Mario hit a dead end. Discuss.
I really hate how I've made more than 12,000 posts here. Thankfully this swaying, moving Chandelure makes it all worth it.

...you can't go beyond space.

He's either stuck in space or gonna go back to a single world.

He's either going back to 2D platforming, or 3D platforming. No traveling space, but a more simple kind of adventure, more like SMB1-SM64.

Alternatively, if they want to go further, there's always time travel, but that would turn the game into an Ocarina of Time clone be as far as I could imagine Mario going.

When has Mario ever been bad? Even the games not made by Nintendo themselves have entertainment value.

I want a Mario game that's non-linear. Kind of like Sunshine, but bigger. Speaking of Sunshine, there needs to be a sequel.

inb4 faggots who don't appreciate Sunshine.

We just need another title like SM64/Sunshine, but without a gimmick. No space. No F.L.U.D.D.
Just Jumps. Double Jumps. Triple Jumps. Shell Riding. Yoshi. Punches. Kicks. Backflips. Running leaps. That kinda poop.

I'd be down with this, as long as it doesn't have F.L.U.D.D.

No.
F.L.U.D.D. was a gimmick for sure, but the level design, music, and art style were all awesome. I happened to like F.L.U.D.D., but oddly enough my favorite level in Sunshine was the one where Shadow Mario took your F.L.U.D.D. and you had to rescue the mayor of the Pianta Village and could do it in several different ways.

I always walked around the edge of the village until I got to the spring in the center, then I would jump into it and have Mario fling water all around and dissolve the lava. That kind of experimentation is what made the game awesome.

I think he meant a 3D game with no gimmicks that was non-linear.

I don't really think of space as a gimmick. I think the whole planets thing was just a way of eliminating camera issues, and also added a cool style to the game. It's more of a change of scenery like Sunshine than a gimmick like FLUDD.
